Fort Pitt was not as is popularly assumed, named after William Pitt, but because it was a popular picnicking spot in the early history of Pittsburgh and because couples would spit the pits of their cherries there.
Legend has it that “if a couple each spit a cherry pit upon this spot, their love will last as long, and be as tough as the tree that springs up in its place”
